This menacing Blue Devil debuted in 1936, roughly a decade after the university adopted the nickname – albeit tenuously at first, because of the name’s demonic implications. Duke’s student newspaper ran a naming contest, featuring mascots that would incorporate the color blue, which the paper editors selected in particular. Voters selected from an eclectic list of names, including Blue Eagles, Blue Titans, Royal Blazes and (of course) Blue Devils. Brought to you in partnership with College Vault.
